Due to the large turnout (yay!), Kimberley decided that we would do introductions then have a few demonstrations. The back carry was demonstrated with a few different mei tai carriers. Standard back carry with Lexi twist and high back carry were shown.
We also noticed one mama who had her baby perfectly positioned in her ring sling. Several of the mothers in the group asked about the differences between different ring slings. There were plenty of different ring slings represented, which showed the various pleat styles.
After the formal demonstrations, the curious to paired up with the experienced for some one-on-one instruction.
One mama had a one month old and wanted to know if she could use a mei tai. One of the other mamas helped her try on a mei tai and showed her how to situate baby's feet in "froggy" position.
A couple of mamas were wearing wraps. Kimberley demonstrated a couple of basic wrap carries and talked about how many people find wraps to be the most comfortable way to wear a baby.
Also one mama had a problem with the waist buckle on her new soft structured carrier. One of the babywearing veterans inspected the carrier and determined the buckle to be defective. They contacted the manufacturer.
It is always necessary to inspect your baby carriers and make sure they are in good, SAFE working order. If you EVER suspect there is a problem, do not use the carrier. And try to speak with a local vendor or experienced babywearer so you know specifically what the problem may be. Then contact the vendor/manufacturer for repair or replacement.
Overall we had a great meeting. The room was just about full, and people are making an effort to get to know one another, and help one another.
Babywearing rocks! :-)
